Ceiling mount barn door hardware routes the track to the ceiling joists rather than the wall the right solution when there's no wall surface above the opening to mount into. The most common situation is a doorway that runs floor to ceiling, leaving no wall above for a standard track mount. Masonry walls, open-concept spaces without a solid header, and certain commercial installations are other typical cases.
This is not a general alternative to wall-mounted hardware. If you have a solid header or wall surface above the opening, standard wall-mounted hardware is the right choice it's a simpler install and gives you more flexibility on track length. Ceiling mount is specifically for situations where wall mounting isn't possible.
